Organizational Commitments

Our products are natural, organic materials made from byproducts of the meat industry, diverting waste from landfills.

When you choose a Garrett Leather product, you creatively reuse upcycled hides, transformed into a beautiful, durable product that would otherwise end up in landfills. We carefully select our European leather hides that are a natural byproduct of the meat industry. The European Union leads the world in passing legislation that protects farmed animals from cruel treatment, banning artificial growth hormones and prohibiting the use of GMO grains. Animal farmers also follow and record the place of birth, the parents, location raised and vaccinations received for each cow to ensure full traceability. These animals grow at normal rates and graze on natural grass in spacious, open fields. Under these natural conditions, the integrity of the fiber structure is stronger and intact without any damage caused by unnatural growth rates, barbed wires or brands.

Leather production is one of the oldest forms of recycling and at Garrett Leather, we work with tanneries that adhere to responsible manufacturing processes.

Our European tanneries meet the following qualifications ...
  • REACH compliant
  • ISO9001 certified
  • ISO1400 certified
  • Audited members of Leather Working Group
These tanneries adhere to the European Union's strict environmental protection guidelines and implement other responsible practices ...
  • Reusing resources to minimize waste during hide preservation.
  • Tanning with either naturally occurring chromium salts or vegetable plant extracts.
  • Minimizing waste with virtually 100% of dyes being absorbed into the leather.
  • Using sophisticated water purification systems that return clean, drinkable water to the environment.
At our corporate headquarters ...
  • Our distribution center is powered by clean, renewable energy sources with the installation of high efficiency solar panels. By harnessing the power of the sun, Garrett Leather significantly reduced the company’s carbon emissions, leading to a decrease in the company’s overall carbon footprint and dependence on non-renewable energy sources.
  • We participate in FedEx’s Carbon Neutral shipping program to offset the carbon footprint of the shipments that leave our headquarters. We continue to look for ways to minimize our environmental impact.
Renewable

Multi Attribute Certifications

Genuine leather is a rapidly renewable natural resource, both 100% post-consumer recyclable and 100% biodegradable.

The intricate, densely packed collagen fiber structure of natural leather provides high flexibility and incredible strength. The ultimate sustainable material, leather keeps waste out of landfills and instead provides a durable product that lasts up to five times longer than other upholstery materials.

Benefits of choosing Garrett Leather's quality and non-toxic products
  • Our leather does not contain toxins such as conflict materials, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), bisphenol A (BPA), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), or plastics, heavy metals or phthalates.
  • Many of our products offer antibacterial protection, as well as stain and water resistance, requiring little maintenance and eliminating the need for harsh cleaning chemicals.
  • Our products may contribute to LEED and BIFMA Point Qualification.
  • GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified, our signature leather smells meet stringent VOC emission standards
  • We use salt-based and non-toxic flame retardants to treat hides at our corporate headquarters, and our flame-treated products meet FAR regulations, California Technical Bulletin 117 and California Assembly Bill No. 2998, as well as other industry-standard requirements.
  • We hired a third party, independent consultant to conduct thorough Life Cycle Assessments for many of our products. These were the foundations for our Environmental Product Declarations. You may download our EPDs on our product detail pages in the Shop section./li>

Cattle are raised for their meat, not their hides. The hides that are used to make leather represent a very small percentage of overall value to the farmer.

Ending leather production will not stop cattle production for the meat and dairy industries. If leather production stopped, it would create a huge problem with greenhouse gas emissions, estimated at 6.6 million tons per year.

Clear Vision Forward

Material Health + Transparency

At Garrett Leather, we continuously evolve and explore ways to reduce our environmental impact and lessen our carbon footprint while being clear about what our clients can expect when they make a purchase from us.

We disclosed the ingredients of many of our products to Declare for full transparency. Most of our products achieved LBC Red List Free status.

We continuously evolve and explore ways to reduce our environmental impact. Olive tanning is an alternative method for leather production that utilizes 100% plant-based tannins made from discarded olive leaves, branches, and other natural waste from olive harvesting. Olive tanning reduces reliance on mined chemicals and requires less water.

Several years ago, we introduced Mira, our first pure aniline, olive tanned collection.

Driven by innovation, we took a step further on our sustainable journey with our second olive tanned collection, Cielo. We worked with a leading climate offset consultant in Europe to purchase and retire Gold Standard Verified Emissions Reduction (VER) credits. These credits offset all GHGs of Cielo’s production. We invested in a drinking water purification system in Napal. This project not only protects the environment, it also reduces preventable waterborne diseases and causes of death by improving access to safe water and sanitation.
